Guide · choosing a tool

How to choose an AI brand monitoring tool: ten questions.

Every tool in this category says it tracks your brand in ChatGPT. The differences are in what it keeps, what it asks, and what it charges. These are the questions that separate them, with our own answers stated plainly so you can hold us to the same standard.

We do not review competitors here, because nothing in this document is checked against their products and a comparison written from a sales page is worse than none. What follows is the list of questions we would ask any vendor, and what Prism answers to each. Ask the others the same.

  1. 01

Does it keep the full answer, or a score?

A score you cannot open cannot be checked, and the first time a client asks why the number moved you will need the sentence the engine wrote. Prism stores every response word for word; every report number traces back to a sentence.
  2. 02

Is web search on, and does it say when it is not?

A memory-only answer reflects training data that may be a year old. A grounded answer reflects what the engine finds today, and comes with sources. Prism asks with live web search wherever the engine supports it and marks which answers searched.
  3. 03

    Which engines, exactly?

The ones your customers use. Prism asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. If a tool lists an engine your customers have never heard of and omits one they use daily, the coverage is for the brochure.
  4. 04

Are the prompts the customer’s words or a keyword list?

Nobody asks an engine “running shoes flat feet”. Prism writes prompts from your brand vocabulary and audiences, in sentences, and lets you edit every one. How to write the question is a guide of its own.
  5. 05

Does it run on a schedule and keep the history?

One run is a snapshot. The useful number is a rate across runs, so the tool needs a cadence you set and a record that does not roll off. Prism keeps every run, and the reports read across them.
  6. 06

Does it discover competitors, or only count the ones you typed?

The brands that matter are the ones the engines name, and you do not know all of them yet. Prism reads every brand out of the stored answers and lists the untracked ones with a count and a button to start tracking them.
  7. 07

Does it capture the cited sources?

The URLs an engine leaned on are the actionable half of the answer. Prism collects every one, splits them into yours, competitors’ and everyone else’s, and lists the prompts where a rival won the citation. Why the sources matter.
  8. 08

What does a run cost, and is it shown before it runs?

Every answer is a paid API call, so a tool that hides the cost per answer is hiding its margin. Prism meters in credits: four for a live answer, two for a cached one, roughly 140 for ten prompts across four engines, shown on screen while you set the schedule. Starter is $19 a month; reporting on search, crawl and GA4 is free.
  9. 09

What happens when an engine fails to answer?

It should be excluded from the rate and refunded, not scored as a miss. Prism records it as no answer and refunds the failed portion of the run.
  10. 10

Does it join to the search data you already have?

AI answers and Google rankings are the same brand seen twice. Prism keeps your Search Console history in the same warehouse and matches prompts to the queries you rank for by meaning, so you can see which search wins carry over into answers and which do not.

The two questions that decide it

If you only have time for two, ask the first and the eighth: can I read the answer, and what does a run cost. A tool that keeps the text and prices the call honestly has made the two decisions that shape everything else. One that keeps a score and sells seats has made the opposite two, and the rest of the feature list is decoration on that.

How far to trust the number any of these tools produces, and what none of them can tell you, is covered in the guide on reliability.

Frequently asked questions

What should an AI brand monitoring tool actually store?

The complete answer text, every time. A score with no text behind it cannot be checked, and the moment a client asks why the number moved you need the sentence the engine wrote.

Which engines should it cover?

The ones your customers ask. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude between them cover most of that today, and a tool should say which of them it asks with live web search on, because a memory-only answer is a different measurement.

How should it be priced?

Transparently against the cost of an answer. Every answer is a paid API call, so a tool should tell you what a run costs before it runs, and refund the calls that fail. Prism prices in credits: four for a live answer, two for a cached one, shown before you schedule.

Is there a way to try before buying?

Run the free brand check. One question, four engines, live web search, every answer in full, no account. If the answers surprise you, that is what the tool is for.

Ask us the ten questions. Then ask the others.

Prism keeps the text, shows the cost before the run, refunds the failures, and starts at $19 a month. The free plan carries every search, crawl and GA4 report with no expiry.
