How to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand.

Most people open ChatGPT, type their own name and read a flattering paragraph. It tells you nothing about what a customer sees. Here is the check that does, and a free way to run it across four engines at once.

Why asking ChatGPT about yourself misleads you

Type your brand into ChatGPT and it will tell you about your brand. That proves the model has heard of you. It does not tell you whether a customer who never typed your name would ever hear it.

Three things distort the answer you get by hand. Your question names you, so the engine talks about you. Your account has a history, and the consumer apps quietly use it, so an SEO who has spent a month asking about their own client gets a different answer from a stranger. And a single answer is one draw from a model that samples: ask again tomorrow and the wording moves, sometimes the brands in it move too.

There is a fourth, larger one. Without web search on, the engine answers from what it learned in training, which can be a year old. With it on, it answers from pages it finds today. Those are two different measurements, and only the second describes what a customer with the default settings sees.

The check that works

  1. 01

Write the customer’s question, not yours

Leave your brand out of it. “Best running shoes for flat feet” is a question. “Is Prism a good SEO tool” is a prompt to say yes. If you would not expect a stranger to type it, do not type it.
  2. 02

Ask from a clean context, with web search on

No history, no memory of you, search enabled. That is what the customer has. The free brand check does this for you: it puts the question to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity with live web search and no account behind it.
  3. 03

    Read for four things

Were you named at all. How early: first in a list of five is a recommendation, fifth is a footnote. In what terms: the sentence around your name is the review. And who else was named, because the brands that keep turning up are the ones winning this question.
  4. 04

    Look at the sources

With search on, the answer carries the URLs the engine drew from. Those pages are the ones it trusted enough to lean on. If none of them is yours, that is your list. How to read the cited sources is its own guide.
  5. 05

    Do it again next week

One check is a snapshot. The engines are not deterministic and the web under them moves. The useful number is how often you are named across many runs. That is what tracking on a schedule gives you, and the reason a free check should be the start rather than the answer.

What the result looks like

Each engine comes back with one of three verdicts: mentioned, not mentioned, or no answer, and the full text underneath. “Not mentioned” and “no answer” are kept apart on purpose. An engine that refused or timed out has told you nothing about your brand, and a tool that counts it as a miss is inventing a data point.

The line to read first is the summary: your brand appeared in three of four live answers to this question, or in none. Then open the answers and find your name. Where it sits in the paragraph is the second number, and the brands beside it are the third.

From one check to a number you can quote

A check tells you what one engine said once. A rate tells you how you stand. Prism runs the same prompts on the cadence you set, across the same four engines, and keeps every answer word for word, so share of voice, answer position, sentiment and citations are read from real text rather than estimated. Ten prompts on Starter, at $19 a month, is enough to find out where you stand on the questions that matter to you. New accounts get 100 credits, which covers one full scan across all four engines before you pay anything.

How much to trust that number, and what no tool can tell you, is the subject of the guide on reliability.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my brand appears in ChatGPT?

Write the question a customer would ask without naming you, put it to the engine with web search on, and read whether you are named, how early, beside whom, and citing which pages. The free brand check does this across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity at once, in about a minute, with no account.

Why does ChatGPT mention my brand when I ask, but not when the tool asks?

Because you asked with your brand in the question, from an account whose history knows you. The tool asks a clean question from a clean context, as a customer would. The second answer is the one to act on.

Is there a free way to see what ChatGPT says about my company?

Yes. The free brand check runs one question across four engines with live web search, three times a day, no account and no card, and shows every answer in full.

How often should I check?

Once tells you where you stand today. The answers change from run to run, so the useful number is how often you are named across many runs. Tracking on a weekly schedule, with the answers kept, is how you get that number.

The free check takes about a minute. Tracking it weekly takes an account and ten prompts.
